Before

Claire shrieks with laughter as Scott picks her up, lifting her into his arms.

“You’re not seriously going to—”

“It’s tradition! I have to carry you over the threshold.”

“Scott, we’ve been married for almost two years. I don’t think the tradition applies to us.” But Claire nestles her head into his neck and he can feel her smile against his skin.

He steps over the threshold and into the empty house that is now officially theirs. Their first home. Maybe their forever home. He sets her down, the heels of Claire’s boots clacking loudly against the hardwood floor and echoing through the house. She takes his hand and starts leading him from room to room.

“A big dining table in here for family dinners. A farm style one, with a rustic chandelier overhead,” she says, talking animatedly. She pulls him into the den. “A sectional sofa, against this wall here, for family movie nights.” Hands entwined, they head up the stairs.

“King size, right here,” Scott says, moving them into the master bedroom. “And this shower needs christening.”

“Mmm,” she says, her eyes lingering on the massive walk-in shower.

They make their way from room to room, ending with the smallest bedroom at the end of the hall.

“This would make a good nursery,” Claire says, her voice a little dreamy.

“It would,” Scott agrees, his hands on her shoulders.

She turns to him, her bottom lip caught between her teeth. “What would you think if I maybe…stopped taking my birth control?” Her eyebrows raise hopefully.

Scott smiles, big and wide. “Yeah.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. Let’s have a baby.”

Claire kisses him. Everything is perfect.
